On Lap 30 of the Anduril Race the Base 250, the caution came out when the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing Camry driven by Brent Crews blew up.
Van Gisbergen, who was third in the order, elected to stay out under the caution with a view towards flipping the stage.
Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Hill took the inside for the Lap 32 restart with Trackhouse Racing driver Connor Zilisch on the outside.
Van Gisbergen got such a good restart that he went three-wide with Hill and Zilisch initially, but backed out entering Turn 1.
Despite giving the top two drivers room, Hill missed the apex at the first turn and pushed Zilisch wide and into the outside wall.
Van Gisbergen, with a full head of steam, got into the back of Hill and went into the wall as well.

Multiple cars were mired in the melee, including Spire Motorsports’ Michael McDowell and 23XI Racing’s Riley Herbst who got hit by the spinning SVG.
“I got a pretty good start and then kind of backed out of it to let them go,” said van Gisbergen.
“I obviously didn’t want to be three-wide and then not good from there.”

Zilisch was bemused by the incident, having given Hill racing room on the restart.
“I felt like I was giving Austin space and the next thing I was in the wall,” said Zilisch.
“Really unfortunate, I hate to end both days for both Shane and I in the Red Bull Chevrolets.
“We had a really fast car today, got out front, felt really good, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
“I had a lot of fun. I really enjoyed being able to race out front and lead laps.
“We had a really fast car. Super proud of the entire team, but hate to end the day this short It’s been a big weekend for all of us at Red Bull.”
The race was briefly red-flagged to fix the damaged wall and eventually resumed with Herbst at the head of the field alongside Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson.
